Promise of Love

I can remember
the dress that you wore there that night
I’ll never forget
the way that your eyes shone so bright
and I can’t recall
a moment that I felt alone
I can’t even think
of a time when the truth wasn’t known

and I think
oh, darlin’
you’re sent from the heavens
and how did I get you
why did you stay
oh, darlin’
you look like an angel
to me

wouldn’t you think
someone like me would search all of his life
I looked ‘cross the room
and the sight of you cut like a knife
and I couldn’t stop
the feeling that ran over me
I started to dream
and all of my wishes were free

and I think
oh, darlin’
you’re sent from the heavens
and how did I get you
why did you stay
oh, darlin’
you look like an angel
to me

I can’t explain
the smell of the perfume on your wrist
I can’t describe
the magic I feel in your kiss
now don’t you know
that you and I were meant to be
isn’t it clear
that it’s only you that can save me

and I think
oh, darlin’
you’re sent from the heavens
and how did I get you
why did you stay
oh, darlin’
you look like an angel
to me

oh, darlin’
just sleep in the silence
as I sit by the window
and feel the night air
oh, darlin’
the night is wide open
so take my hand and walk with me there

oh, darlin’
the river is callin’
the grass will be warm
the sky will be blue
oh, darlin’
I can’t stop my feelings
my heart’s overflowing with love for you

oh, darlin’
you look like an angel
to me

(from “Part Five: An Album Full”)

The reader will make up his or her own mind but, to me, this maybe is the best. Which simply means that all things came together: I conveyed the sentiment successfully with words and phrases that resonate. This one makes me – and should make you – sigh. No angst. No yearning. Just bliss. Contentment. I have to say: I hear Don Henley’s “Lilah” in my head when I read this.
