I Lied to You

My emotions run dry and my head is unclear
this is a different song to you, my dear
a song about the weakness kept in my soul
and sometimes confusion can make you whole
and we’ve been together for so long now
and sometimes a lie gets wrapped up in a vow
but you know that I’ve loved you each day since then
there were times I forgave and times I would bend
but I don’t regret
and you don’t yet
and I hope I don’t make you
a moment I slipped
and lost my grip
baby, I guess I’ve been untrue
and God forgive me
I lied to you

a clear-headed man wouldn’t make my mistake
I know I give half of the things that I take
my heart was impulsive and careless at best
until I’m forgiven I know I won’t rest
a man can do things for reasons unknown
I’m taking a chance that could cost me my home
the difference is why I go back to years ago
and taste of the danger I never did know
I take a chance
and a stolen glance
and a grey sky once was blue
an evening spent
it came and went
baby, I guess I’ve been untrue
and God forgive me
I lied to you

something you did not deserve
’cause I must’ve lost my nerve
when I should’ve been there for you
and I knew it wasn’t right
when I was there with her that night
now I gotta prove I really care for you
I care for you
baby, I guess I’ve been untrue
baby, I lied to you

now I’m asking if you still love me
I wonder if we two still can be
and there’s nothing more that I can do
except say I’m still in love with you
even though, baby
even though I’ve been untrue
and even though
I lied to you

In Your Eyes

Lips so red
eyes so dark
this girl she is painting
her way to my heart
she looks at me
I look at her
her eyes they are telling me
to stop and come over

baby
what’s in your eyes
I hear them callin’
they hypnotize
I see you smilin’
when you look at me
what a movie
you and I would be

I know you
and you know me
but we’ll just have to
wait and see
I feel your touch
and you feel mine
we’ll have to hold on
for another time

oh, baby
what’s in your eyes
they’re as clear as
the bluest skies
I see you shinin’
through the rain
and we are fire
I see the flames

oh, baby
I know your name
and this feelin’
no one can tame
and you’ll be lookin’
back at me
I know my soul
you can plainly see

(from “Part Five: An Album Full”)

I heard Keith Richards singing the Rolling Stones’ “You Got the Silver” when I wrote this. The lyric here is very simple, blunt.

Seeing Eye

I’m heading out to the window tonight
I’ll watch the leaves blow out in the moonlight
watch the sweepers go and they get uptight
dustin’ around the ashtrays of another wasted night

the lights burn hard and the clock winds down
one day I’ll save my money and move uptown
I’m tired of bein’ the fool, always bein’ the clown
I wanna walk these streets tonight underneath a shiny crown

an’ my baby, she don’t care if I’m goin’ nowhere
and just as long as she keeps her fingers in my hair
who knows where I’m goin’, as long as she’s with me there
and the rains may come but now I just don’t care

I’m staggerin’ through my life
just like a lost prophet on his last cigarette
and I’m a blind man caught
in the fences of a night that ain’t over yet
an’ the storm may blow
an’ my days may be hollow
I’m ridin’ with the flow
an’ she knows that I’ll follow
’cause the night is thick and the sky is deep
but there’s a picture in my head I’ll always keep
I’m in your arms and I’m fast asleep
and I know I’m sowin’ what I wanna reap
when I throw my hands up
into the midnight sky
and when my eyes go blind
you’ll be my seeing eye

so, we got into the car and headed up to the lake
the night was so real, not a goddamn thing was fake
she was wearin’ a sundress that was more than I could take
and I knew I’d be puttin’ my fingers in the cake

the sun burned red and we watched the thing set
with my lips on her ear I began placin’ my bets
then she whispered somethin’ that I’ll never forget
but I better not mention ’cause the song ain’t over yet

on the way back home she had her head on my shoulder
and I was sittin’, smilin’, with a cigarette in smoulder
it was one of those summer nights when you ain’t gettin’ older
and then I whispered somethin’ and I’m glad I told her

when I know I’ve fallen
just like a bourbon saint on a barroom floor
when my ass is draggin’
and I check my soul with the girl at the door
an’ when the weight falls
an’ my engine stalls
take a trip down the hall
and I’ve missed last call
when the sun gets tired of shining it’s light
and I’m pushin’ real hard and with all my might
well, I’ll smoke it to the filter and jus’ for spite
I’ll be pullin’ no punches and winnin’ the fight
when nothing works out
no matter how hard I try
and when my eyes go blind
you’ll be my seeing eye

the moon shone down upon my face
I was a starry night dreamer starin’ off into space
when I got to your house you were dressed up in lace
and we closed the door and were lost without a trace

as I lay in your arms there was peace in my soul
you showed me the diamond in a pile of coal
you pulled me out when I was deep in a hole
and on that hot summer night my heart you stole

and you know I feel like I’m comin’ back home
comin’ on back to the best thing I’ve ever known
we’ve both been down the road and together we’ve grown
I hold your hand again and I’m not alone

and we are together
just like two lovers on the porch at dawn
and that’s all that matters
the pain is over and the loneliness gone
and now the sun shines
on you and you’re mine
and you’re right on time
and it’s sweet as wine
now I wake up to the bright morning sun
and my very first thought is that I’m still the one
starting where we finished ’cause we’re nowhere near done
and I just want to tell you that you’re the only one
now that you’re here
I’ve got something to live by
and when my eyes go blind
you’ll be my seeing eye

the only thing I know
is that you’re mine
all the hurt and pain
is left behind
I’m back at the wheel
I can stop on a dime
and it feels good to know
when my eyes go blind
you’ll be at my side
you’ll be my seeing eye

(from “Part Five: An Album Full”)

An optimistic fairy tale. Really sounds nice. Basically an “epic” poem – this would be a long song. I’d like to hear it sung.

Two Midnights

And I watch your hair bounce as you walk out that door
and a grin lays on my face
but it was only two midnights and you know it was nothing more
no more than a quick taste

you left me in the dark sitting there by the phone
but I had the tunes up loud
I guess you thought you were leaving me broken and alone
as you slipped back to the crowd

and now
two midnights later
I’m movin’ along
the sun’s up this morning
and two midnights are gone
now I’m back on the street
you know that’s where I belong
the sun’s bright today
and two midnights are gone

when I hung up the phone at least I knew where I stood
I knew how you felt inside
I won’t forget even though I know I should
it was a damn good ride

maybe you’re not worth me even writing this down
I just thought it had to be said
and I know it’s not worth me even waiting around
there’s too much on in my head

and now
two midnights later
I’m movin’ along
the sun’s up this morning
and two midnights are gone
now I’m back on the street
you know that’s where I belong
the sun’s bright today
and two midnights are gone

and I still remember those nights by your side
but now my head is clear
and I won’t forget your kiss or your arms open wide
but now I’m gone, my dear

sometime you might come lookin’ to find me in the night
but I can’t wait for you there
someday you’ll remember and you’ll know I was right
but it’s all over now, baby blue

and now
two midnights later
I’m movin’ along
the sun’s up this morning
and two midnights are gone
now I’m back on the street
you know that’s where I belong
the sun’s bright today
and two midnights are gone

no, I won’t forget your kiss or your arms open wide
and don’t you forget those nights by my side
and this is gonna have to be the end of the song
because the sun’s bright today and two midnights are gone

(from “Part Five: An Album Full”)

Sometimes, it’s not forever. And you both know it. I find it hard to hear this sung now all these years later. I’m sure it sounds good, though. BTW, I just notice now that in the first line she’s walking out the door and a few lines later he’s sitting there by the phone. ‘Sup?

Catch a Dream

I was there on the floor
with my back against the door
searching for the mysterious light
and if I wasn’t back for more
I don’t know what I was there for
a love-hungry saint in the night

and your perfume was there
and my fingers were in my hair
and I felt for you there in the dark
I wondered if I’d dare
and I wondered if I’d even care
bein’ in between ain’t no walk in the park

and you would hold my hand
and I was the king of this here land
but it seemed like a summer’s day dream
I heard music from the band
and all the courage I could command
I was just trying to keep my hands clean

and I was
tryin’ to catch a dream
combin’ my hair in the mirror
tryin’ to look just like James Dean
tryin’ to catch a dream
and I knew it, I could do it
if I could keep my engine clean

in the dark of the movie house
my fingers were quiet as a church mouse
and reality it hit me like lead
behind the softness of your blouse
was a fire no one could douse
I felt desire goin’ ’round in my head

the shivers up the back of my neck
were makin’ me a nervous wreck
when you brought your lips close to my ear
you know that moment you connect
and all your fears just hit the deck
I said to myself that moment is here

and I walked you to your door
my heart was beggin’ you for more
but the night was tellin’ me to go
and the sweat began to pour
as your boots hit the floor
and I just had to tell the night no

and I was
tryin’ to catch a dream
combin’ my hair in the mirror
tryin’ to look just like James Dean
tryin’ to catch a dream
and I knew it, I could do it
if I could keep my engine clean

in the mornin’ when I woke
I thought it must’ve been a joke
but your scent was still hangin’ in the air
and when you turned to me and spoke
I checked to see if my heart was broke
but I found that all the pieces were there

the mornin’ sun was bright
and it bathed us in it’s holy light
as I lay there holdin’ you near
and it all just felt so right
it was warm just like a summer night
and everything all seemed so clear

now I’m stayin’ by your side
and I know it now deep down inside
I found what I needed to be free
I’m just happy that I tried
glad I came along for the mystery ride
I’m just glad that it happened to me

I was just
tryin’ to catch a dream
combin’ my hair in the mirror
tryin’ to look just like James Dean
tryin’ to catch a dream
and I knew it, I could do it
if I could keep my engine clean

(from “Part Five: An Album Full”)

I like how wordy it is. A lot of lines have a couple extra syllables. And I’ve always loved the idea of ‘trying to catch a dream’ as a motif.
